The name of one Rio Rico High sophomore should now be a byword for several thousand cross-country fans in Arizona, but the announcer at Cave Creek Golf Course couldn’t seem to get it right at first. As he called out the leaders, the pronunciation of Aeoleone Bristow’s first name changed three or more times before he got it right. That’s Aeoleone (Aya-oh-lee-own). The last “E” is silent, said dad and coach Roger Bristow.

Bristow finished the Cave Creek course in 19:07.05 to take the girls’ 4A Division II individual state championship Saturday.

Bristow took the lead about halfway on the course, and didn’t look back. “I was at the bowl when I took it, that big dip, and I was there. I didn’t want the girls to pass me on the hills because we love hills in Rio Rico. I just took the lead when I thought I could,” she said.
